The low rating from me is my own doing. I was looking for a new monitor to replace an old graphics-centric Viewsonic. I do a lot of photo-editing work at what I would call a sub-pro, advanced consumer level. I thought that this NEC's price point and feature set would be a great balance, short of going to a full-on, color calibrated (expensive) version. In the end, I'm very disappointed.
As a business software (read, Excel) monitor, it is great. Its energy star credentials are seductive. But as a photo-editing monitor, don't go there. The screen has more than reasonable viewing angles, but contrast and brightness change so much off center that anything close to accurate photo editing is very frustrating. The shift is so bad that it effectively distorts color accuracy decisions.
My last comment is simple, the built-in speaker is dreadful. I keep looking to see if there is something I am doing wrong, but the only sound I get appears to be from a single, centered speaker. While it may be stereo by design (maybe), the sound quality is nothing less than terrible.
This is my first, mostly negative review, but the monitor is just not great. It is a very compromised set of features--good and bad!
